In combat gold stated in a previous post, we have a separate curriculum of techniques that we are teaching. We drill them over and over, then at the beginning of the next month we are tested on all of the techniques making sure that we know all of them to the point. I love this system because it’s forcing our Jiu Jitsu gameplans to grow more and more, the more techniques we are learning the more we are forced to retain and be tested on.
There is nothing better then being able to learn a whole new series of techniques to add to your game-plan that you can start using at the competition level. Not only this but as well as finding out what techniques you were struggling with when it came to the test and which need the most work. Having a seperate ciriculium for combat gold is in place because they are the top of the top that train at Team Third Law the students that are the most dedicated, want to train the hardest, and learn as fast as possible.
If you think your ready to start training in a Team atomsphere that treaches you a detailed ciriculium, with series of attacks about certain positions until you master the position then this school is the place for you. Not only will you learn more in one day then most people that train are able to learn in an entire week but you will be able to retain this information because you want to get a good grade on your test.

This move along with many others will be things that the people in the combat gold program at Team Third Law will be tested on at the end of this month. Not only this choke but other moves such as all of the brabo chokes, and other small errors that Roberto Torralbas the head instructor has seen us making at the tournament level.
The bread cutter choke is not only a super effective choke, but probably one of the safest and hardest submissions to stop from the north south position. Because once in the north south position the persons elbows usually open up when they try to bridge and shrimp. This is the perfect opportunity to sink your hand underneath their arm and grab with a collar grip.
You can check out more of the curriculum this month for combat gold on http://www.ThirdLawCoach.com. Where you will also find all of the techniques we will be teaching this month in the white belt basics program and also the Muay Thai – Kick Boxing. This website is the biggest resource for our students to use to retain the most about techniques being taught, and its a great resource to look over past techniques we went over in case you have questions about specific details.

Traveling is one of the best parts about Jiu Jitsu, because when start to get more involved with the sport such as competing and going to international level tournaments you have to travel to get to these places. Which for me is a great aspect of the sport because not only do you get to compete and challenge yourself up again top competition but you get to travel around the world seeing places that you would not normally go to depending on if you choose to do Jiu Jitsu or not. So not only do you get to travel with Jiu Jitsu but you get to to travel with your teammates.
We really look forward to going to competitions in places like Brazil & throughout the United States such as California because not only do you get to do a sport that is going to allow you test yourself on a daily basis in the classroom training hard but against people that you have never met before. Jiu Jitsu is going to open up many opportunities in your life that you may not have thought of in the past. Simply because you didn’t think they were possible or goals that you thought were unattainable.
All of the goals that you wanted to achieve, are possible and your teammates at Team Third Law are going to guide you on the path that will take you where you need to go to achieve these goals. Maybe your goal was to travel around the world competition, well we already have competitors that are doing this and taking advantage of the fact that Jiu Jitsu is allowing them to do these things. So if you want to start traveling, competiting, getting into the best shape of your life today join Team Third Law and start your path to greatness.

Today’s test was a blast overall, we had a little bit better overall average of a B+. Which is good it shows us that our students are catching on to using the outside resources to the school wisely and investing their time wisely in class as well. We had a great turnout of students as well for the test and all of them did outstanding. The ones that really stood out would be Joey Ruggiero with back to back 100% scores on both of his tests and Kim Rivers with a 100% on her test as well, both of these students training hard to retain the most knowledge of the technique.
What most people don’t know about Team Third Law is that we NEVER charge for Belts, testing, or any of these things. Why? you may ask simply because we want you to know that we are giving you the belt in that we feel you deserve it and not that we want you to pay us for it. So what we due ask in return is a small donation to the school for the competition team so that the we have a little bit less worries when it comes to making sure our competitors can get a good nights rest before a tournament.
We are just starting to take donations for the competition team simply because the people that are competing are the people in the school that are the most dedicated the ones that are putting all of their time and investing it into Jiu Jitsu because they love the sport. Not everyone gets to do that maybe because of life circumstances, so all we are asking is that you help support these students and give a small donation the the competition to help them out because every little bit helps.

The Houston International Open is a tournament that will be held in march. Very excited about this tournament for Team Third Law because we will be taking 4 top notch competitors, Roberto Torralbas, Kim Rivers, Kevin Dalton, and Joey Ruggiero will all be representing Team Third Law at this international level tournament.
Competing at the international level is a great goal to have, and winning international level tournaments such as Pan-Ams, Worlds, are some of the best accomplishments to acheieve in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. The last international level tournament that Team Third Law went to was the Miami International Open, we had awesome results there and should see better results from this upcoming tournament.
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu competitions is by far the best way to improve your Jiu Jitsu. You can learn a million things about your technique from competing. Even if you win the match that doesn’t nessecarily mean that you made zero mistakes. On a final note, best of luck to Team Third Law at the Houston International Open, and if your interested in training with the best team in the South West Florida area visit…

When your fighting in tournaments you should always be looking for the submission if the opportunity arise for it and you know its there then go for it. What you don’t want to do is go for the submission and get your guard passed then end up loosing the match because of the fact you went for the submission at a bad time.
This is why the point system that is in place allows you to play very smart and looking for these openings to finish the match without the fear of loosing. This is one example that can happen; you pass someones guard, get to side control, then mount, but once your in mount the guy flips you over and you end up in closed guard. Should 2 points be awarded for the opponent that flipped you over, NO!, the reason being the person on bottom just got out of a really bad position.
Going for the submission at time like being on top of mount after receiving your points is the best time to attempt anything but one of the fundamental rules in Jiu Jitsu is that once you have the position enjoy it. Next time you have a grappling match in class try and keep track of the points and you defintely see a difference in how you do.

Today is test day at Team Third Law. Our test will be on the curriculum from the month of January, going over how to not get your back taken and get choked like the picture above. The day where we test all of our students on what they have been learning over the past months and see if they are truly retaining the information that we are teaching them. Don’t get us wrong though this is not a test that will determine if you are going to get your next belt or not, but it is the best way to see if you are truly learning the technique and what little things you are missing out on.
Testing is super important for us because it has been improving the Jiu Jitsu games of everyone that has been taking them. We have seen tremendous results just over the past two tests. Our first average on the test was around at D average, not good at all, but the students really stepped it up after the first round of testing and bumped the average all the way up to a B average for the school.
Most schools would probably settle for a B average but not at Team Third Law we always strive for greatness and today on 02/03/10 our students reach the goal of an A average for the school to show that we are always improving at Team Third Law. Today is the day for the Abu Dhabi trials, so wish us all luck at the tournament and we got some great news to share with you guys for those of you that don’t know the school is growing, more people, more mat space, more everything and this is because of all the hardwork the students have put into the mats. To make the training enviroment at Team Third Law BJJ the best school anyone could ask for.
On another note, the school is continuing to grow and for those of you that don’t know we are EXPANDING, that’s right expanding the school next door so that we have DOUBLE the mat space for you guys to train in and possibly DOUBLE the class sizes that way you have more people to train with and less down time. Because I have said it once I will say it a million times, Time is your most important asset and you need to manage what you are doing with your time to make effective use of it at all times
For example, as soon as the people next door move their stuff out we are going to open up a doorway, put the mats down and start implementing the brand new mat space that we are going to have available for you guys. So check back here to see the Results of the latest tournaments in the next blog post and new adventures Team Third Law will be taking endeavors in.

As you can see from this video, tomorrow is the day of the Abu Dhabi Trials, and all of Team Third Law competiors that were hungry to show their stuff at this tournament are going to be displaying their skills tommorow and hopefully bringing home some shinny golds to decorate the walls of Team Third Law.
This tournament is a big tournament, and a first tournament at a new level for Chris Ocampo one of Team Third laws recent blue belts. Like I said earlier our team is really hungry to compete to do really well and display how the instruction at Team Third Law is top notch. Although this is a big tournament it isn’t an international Brazilain Jiu Jitsu competition, which is where Roberto is shooting to get medals from this year.
So this event being a great event to get some awesome mat experience in for Pan-Ams coming in April, Worlds, and other large tournaments, were the team can help Roberto Torralbas reach his goal of some International Titles. You can read more on that article in a later post and also on http://wwww.BJJEnginer.com

No one likes it, and if you do there has got to be something wrong with you but regardless the task of cutting weight is not fun. If you have done Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and competed or some type of sport that forces you to be in some weight class you want to be in the lowest one possible. So to do that you have to A) starve yourself for a good amount of time B) hop in a sauna to lose the extra water weight. Neither of these are my favorite thing to do but as a team we usually do B.
You want to make sure that either the day before you are at least within 5-7 lbs of your goal weight that way you can just hop in a sauna and loose all of the remaining weight in water. What you do not want to do is try to use more than 7 lbs in a sauna, that can be very dangerous, so if you just stay within your goal weight around 5 lbs within hoping in a sauna is your best bet.
Then after you weigh in the first thing you want to do is just eat anything and everything in sight… This isn’t usually the best thing to do because by just stuffing your face like a madman you can end up leaving yourself feeling sick or worse than you began. What experts say to do is eat as much as you can but space it out to where your not craming all the food in at once. This is a tough one for most to do because after not eating usually for a day all you can think about is food…
