Ommoplata – Sweep & Submission

Mike Fowler Ommoplata
Mike Fowler Ommoplata

Its getting close to march and at Team Third Law we are going to be starting the second month of the closed guard curriculum meaning, more high percentage sweeps, setups, and submissions. Everything that is going to make your closed guard unstoppable to anyone if you drill these moves enough. Because knowing all of these in a sequence and knowing exactly what to do when the moment arises is crucial in Jiu Jitsu, when you have to stop and think about what your doing that is when you are likely to get your guard passed.

This goes along with sticking to your game plan, say your a closed guard player and your strongest part of your game is closed guard, but in competition you played half- guard. This would be a big mistake, ok use what you your good at and improve upon it. The techniques in closed guard work as follows, attack, attack, attack, over and over. You should really never stop moving when someone is in your closed guard until you sweep you submit. Because when your not breaking grips, breaking the posture, the person is opening your guard.

Listen if you want to learn a series of unstoppable moves to improve your closed guard game you need to watch this video, and just simply watch this one setup and think of how the person can react, and when you does you know your ready for another series of attacks. All of these attacks relate, and by adding the ommoplata this month its going to open your eyes to another series of events that could take place inside of the closed guard…

Not Playing The Other Persons Game

JT Torres Playing His Game

JT Torres Playing His Game

We have talked about how important it is to have a developed game-plan and know what your going to when when the match starts but what can happen is the other person starts their game and forces you into their game-plan before you even get an opportunity to. So to prevent this from happening as soon as you slap hands with your opponent its on…

Your game-plan has begun and if they react before you then it could be the end of the match. For example if your game is to play guard then you need to pull guard as soon as possible, what could happen is the other person has the same gameplan and pulls guard before you and now you are already at a disadvantage because your forced into his game.

This is unfortunately what happens a lot of the time at the higher levels of Jiu Jitsu and even at the white-belt level because you can be really good at a specific game and when forced into someone else’s game it could make or break the match. So think about what you just read and remember as soon as you slap hands the battle has begun and you need to play your game against them and not get forced into playing their game.

Point System Contined…

When your fighting in tournaments you should always be looking for the submission if the opportunity arise for it and you know its there then go for it. What you don’t want to do is go for the submission and get your guard passed then end up loosing the match because of the fact you went for the submission at a bad time.

This is why the point system that is in place allows you to play very smart and looking for these openings to finish the match without the fear of loosing. This is one example that can happen; you pass someones guard, get to side control, then mount, but once your in mount the guy flips you over and you end up in closed guard. Should 2 points be awarded for the opponent that flipped you over, NO!, the reason being the person on bottom just got out of a really bad position.

Going for the submission at time like being on top of mount after receiving your points is the best time to attempt anything but one of the fundamental rules in Jiu Jitsu is that once you have the position enjoy it. Next time you have a grappling match in class try and keep track of the points and you defintely see a difference in how you do.

Importance Of Infastructure

Infastructure

Infastructure

If you do not have an infrastructure developed in your martial arts school then you need to start working on it because without an infrastructure how are you going to develop athletes that will help promote your school and make your school better. A school without infrastructure is like a school withouth rules, or plans for the future. Most people when they decide on a job and what they want to do in the future they usually have a career plan or know what they are going do with their life in the future

This same rule goes for martial arts schools. We planned on expanding the school and now that is what we are doing right now. Working into the late hours of the night sometimes into the morning of the next day to improve the infrastructure of the school. Like we were talking about in the previous article about how you have to always be constantly improving. This is why we are expanding the school next door and have HUGE plans in the future for more and more infastructure.

Just like when cities start out as small towns, then more people move to the area, more roads are built. More people means you need more houses, more grocery stores for food, the list goes on and on… This is exactly what is happening at Team Third Law, we are getting new students everyday, more and more people interested in the program and interested in a martial arts school with the best infrastructure in the southwest Florida area.

Importance Of Constant Improvement

Constant Improvement

Constant Improvement

As athletes we always have to be improving constantly pushing ourselves and challenging ourselves on a daily basis that is how we become better athletes. In competition if you lose that just means you go over the tape, see the mistakes fix them be better prepared next time. The same rule applys or constant improvement. If your not constantly improving then your moving no where which means your going to stay at the same level.

Team Third Law does a great job of always pushing you to that next level of improvement, Roberto Torralbas is a person that lives his life by the motto of always improving. Be it with business, in Jiu Jitsu, whatever aspect of your life you have to constantly push for that next level.   Because this way you will live a life of fulfillment knowing that you are always pushing your mind and body to the next level to become a better person in life.

With that being said, Team Third Law is the best school for you if your someone that has trouble reaching your goals, achieving what you wanted to achieve, whatever it is we can push you to achieve it I guarantee it. So if you like what you just read…

Importance Of Studying

Importance Of Studying

Importance Of Studying

You have to study for tests if you want to do well on them and the same rule will apply to taking a test for Jiu Jitsu. Jiu jitsu is more than just a physical martial art, it involves a lot of thinking and strategizing your game-plan to which techniques you choose to utilize. Making a game-plan is just one aspect of the mental game of Jiu Jitsu and to have a strong game-plan you need to study what works best for you and what you should and shouldn’t use.

At the competition level before a competition a competitor will have a developed gameplan with series of techniques that he or she has drilled over and over again so it comes natural to them and they don’t have to think about it. But to get to that level you first need to drill which is a lot like studying for a big test.

At Third Law we really emphasizing drilling to make your game improve, and we do this by setting up a curriculum where we are doing the same series of techniques for that entire week. Because if we show you two techniques that are not related it is going to be very hard for you to retain that information. So remember, that studying in Jiu Jitsu is just as important has it would be for a big calculus test…
