On Saturday August 21st Team Thirdlaw went to Daytona To represent Team Lloyd Irvin and Third Law BJJ if Naples, FL at the the Daytona BJJ open. The team not only represented by had some amazing results. In total we took home 8 golds, 6 silver, and 2 Bronze. Taking home the white and Blue Belt absolute prizes as well.

First off we had Eric Morales in the Gi where he won two matches for gold in the GI. 1st match won by a triangle real quick, 2nd match won with a nice armbar from the triangle to win his gi division.

Eric Morales 1st Place GI

Then it was Orlando’s turn to tear it up in the gi where he won all four matches by his infamous closed guard arm-bar had a total of four matches.

Orlando 1st Place GI

Then we had Zach Straub who was making his first tournament appearance he fought hard in the GI had a total of two matches where in the first match he was able to take his opponents back from closed guard. In his second match he pulled guard went for a triangle guy passes and ended up getting submitted by an arm triangle but still an awesome first performance from Zach.

Zach Straub 2nd Place GI

Carty was the next first timer competing and he had some great results as well. Carty won 2 matches in the gi had the same results in his first two matches by getting to mount and finishing his opponents with the ezekial choke. 3rd match he had a tough match ended up in an arm triangle and finishing in 2nd place.

Carty 2nd GI

Katy was up next and eager to compete for the first time she went up against a blue belt her first match. The first match she pulled guard, went for bump sweep, swept her to mount and then won by points. Her second match she pulled guard, went for a triangle, and then the girl shook off the triangle ad kept her in flattened out half guard the rest of the match loosing by one advantage.

Katy 2nd Place GI

Then it was time for Chris Ocampo and Joey Ruggiero to win their blue belt divisions. They came to fight and both walked home with gold medals in the GI. Chris had one fight in the GI, where he won by a nice bow and arrow choke from the back.

Chris Ocampo 1st GI

Joey Ruggiero had 2 matches in the GI, 1st match he won real quick with a triangle,2nd match he was able to beat a tough opponent by points after taking his opponents back, and then finishing the match in north south.

Joey Ruggiero 1st Place GI

After the GI Eric Morales, Orlando Castillo, Joey Ruggiero were ready to do the absolute. Eric was up 1st and he won his first match by points, and then his second match he faces off against a much larger opponent and got caught in a kimura. So Orlando redeemed his teammate by winning both his matches 1st march by two points and an advantage and then his second match he won by one point to a very tough opponent who was a wrestler from Ohio state. Allowing Orlando and Eric to close out the division.

Orlando and Eric Close Out Absolute

Next up for absolute were Joey and Chris. Chris had the first match and it started off by him getting taken down unexpectedly which would later be the only points scored throughout the entire match although Chris had a battle fighting for a sweep with the ommoplata to get on top. Then it was Joey’s turn to test himself in the absolute where he fought the same opponent his teammate Chris lost to and dismantled him by triangling him within a minute of the match. Then went on to fight in the finals against a much larger opponent where Joey was able to pull guard, sweep, pass the guard and mount to finish the match on top by points.

Joey Ruggiero 1st Place Absolute

Nogi was up next and it was time to tear that up too. Eric Morales being in the lightest weight class was up first match was another victory by an arm-bar from closed guard, then winning his second match by default when the guy went for an ankle-lock and got disqualified giving Eric the gold medal.

Eric Morales 1st Place NoGI

Orlando was up next in the no-gi where he won his first match by an arm bar, and then second match but a 0-0 referee’s decision. Then the third match was sealed by yet again another arm-bar, ending the day for Orlando with 3 gold medals.

Orlando Castillo 1st Place NoGI

Katy, Zach, & Carty, all had mostly the same results in the NoGi, where Katy went in like a soilder, and ended up losing by points in a tough match against the girl she lost to in the finals of the GI. Zach, fought hard in his first match but ended up getting submitted to a much larger opponent, to take silver in the No-GI. Carty had the best results in the NoGi by fighting 2 matches, first match got the take down ended up in top of half guard, escaped to the full mount and then won by points from the mount. His second match was a battle where for four and a half minutes he was going for the take down and didn’t know he was up an advantage when he went for a guillotine and got taken down, carty scrambled for the back but time ran out.

Carty 2nd NoGI

Then for the blue belts in Nogi, Chris fought hard in his first match from half guard, where he ended up getting a triangle to ommoplata. Then ended up at the end of the match in the crucifix position where Chris put him in an arm-lock that made his opponent shout in pain but not tap was called and his opponent won. Then for Joey in the NoGi, his first match he pulled guard, then opponent forced him into 50/50 where his opponent was attempting a heel hook until the referee, said no twisting, only straight, kept fighting from that position then when Joey’s opponent went for a Toe hold thinking that his opponent would get the DQ and an easy win tapped and then referee decided that he meant only heel hooks applied to twisting submissions. Nonetheless Joey learned a valuable lesson to never ever leave it to the referees to make decisions.

The day went awesome and as a team we had 23 wins and only 10 losses with 3 brand new competitors. More tournaments to come and excited to see more and more people joining the competition team to start taking their steps to becoming the best they possibly can a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

If your on the competition right now and your looking to go to an international tournament such as Pan-Ams or worlds this year right now you should be competing as much as possible. You need to get as much tournament preparation in before these big types of competition, and you don’t want to go in under-prepared and make mistakes that you could’ve made in less important tournaments.

We look forward to taking as much competitors as possible to Pam-Ams this April to go over there and decimate the competition taking home golds for all of our competitors. That way we can complete Roberto Torralbas goal of International titles this year and gain more and more knowledge about what works best for us at the competitive level.

Pan-Ams and Worlds are two of the most prestigious tournaments to win in the United States. Anyone who is anyone in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu comes out to California to compete there and we at Team Third Law look forward to the competition this year and can’t wait for the future. Until more news arises… Check Out…

In combat gold stated in a previous post, we have a separate curriculum of techniques that we are teaching. We drill them over and over, then at the beginning of the next month we are tested on all of the techniques making sure that we know all of them to the point. I love this system because it’s forcing our Jiu Jitsu gameplans to grow more and more, the more techniques we are learning the more we are forced to retain and be tested on.

There is nothing better then being able to learn a whole new series of techniques to add to your game-plan that you can start using at the competition level. Not only this but as well as finding out what techniques you were struggling with when it came to the test and which need the most work. Having a seperate ciriculium for combat gold is in place because they are the top of the top that train at Team Third Law the students that are the most dedicated, want to train the hardest, and learn as fast as possible.

If you think your ready to start training in a Team atomsphere that treaches you a detailed ciriculium, with series of attacks about certain positions until you master the position then this school is the place for you. Not only will you learn more in one day then most people that train are able to learn in an entire week but you will be able to retain this information because you want to get a good grade on your test.

This move along with many others will be things that the people in the combat gold program at Team Third Law will be tested on at the end of this month. Not only this choke but other moves such as all of the brabo chokes, and other small errors that Roberto Torralbas the head instructor has seen us making at the tournament level.

The bread cutter choke is not only a super effective choke, but probably one of the safest and hardest submissions to stop from the north south position. Because once in the north south position the persons elbows usually open up when they try to bridge and shrimp. This is the perfect opportunity to sink your hand underneath their arm and grab with a collar grip.

You can check out more of the curriculum this month for combat gold on http://www.ThirdLawCoach.com. Where you will also find all of the techniques we will be teaching this month in the white belt basics program and also the Muay Thai – Kick Boxing. This website is the biggest resource for our students to use to retain the most about techniques being taught, and its a great resource to look over past techniques we went over in case you have questions about specific details.

Traveling is one of the best parts about Jiu Jitsu, because when start to get more involved with the sport such as competing and going to international level tournaments you have to travel to get to these places. Which for me is a great aspect of the sport because not only do you get to compete and challenge yourself up again top competition but you get to travel around the world seeing places that you would not normally go to depending on if you choose to do Jiu Jitsu or not. So not only do you get to travel with Jiu Jitsu but you get to to travel with your teammates.

We really look forward to going to competitions in places like Brazil & throughout the United States such as California because not only do you get to do a sport that is going to allow you test yourself on a daily basis in the classroom training hard but against people that you have never met before. Jiu Jitsu is going to open up many opportunities in your life that you may not have thought of in the past. Simply because you didn’t think they were possible or goals that you thought were unattainable.

All of the goals that you wanted to achieve, are possible and your teammates at Team Third Law are going to guide you on the path that will take you where you need to go to achieve these goals. Maybe your goal was to travel around the world competition, well we already have competitors that are doing this and taking advantage of the fact that Jiu Jitsu is allowing them to do these things. So if you want to start traveling, competiting, getting into the best shape of your life today join Team Third Law and start your path to greatness.

Today’s test was a blast overall, we had a little bit better overall average of a B+. Which is good it shows us that our students are catching on to using the outside resources to the school wisely and investing their time wisely in class as well. We had a great turnout of students as well for the test and all of them did outstanding. The ones that really stood out would be Joey Ruggiero with back to back 100% scores on both of his tests and Kim Rivers with a 100% on her test as well, both of these students training hard to retain the most knowledge of the technique.

What most people don’t know about Team Third Law is that we NEVER charge for Belts, testing, or any of these things. Why? you may ask simply because we want you to know that we are giving you the belt in that we feel you deserve it and not that we want you to pay us for it. So what we due ask in return is a small donation to the school for the competition team so that the we have a little bit less worries when it comes to making sure our competitors can get a good nights rest before a tournament.

We are just starting to take donations for the competition team simply because the people that are competing are the people in the school that are the most dedicated the ones that are putting all of their time and investing it into Jiu Jitsu because they love the sport. Not everyone gets to do that maybe because of life circumstances, so all we are asking is that you help support these students and give a small donation the the competition to help them out because every little bit helps.
