Its that time again for Team Third Law competitors to test their skills at the tournament level. Competing to take home some gold medals for the school and to improve their Jiu Jitsu games. Not only is Team Third Law going to be tearing this competition up but future competitions to come.
This tournament is a great tournament to get experience since the rules and the way it is set up is exactly like an IBJJF tournament. The weight classes are the same and the rules are set up the same so it really allows you to get use to the highest level of competition rules and regulations. A great tournament for up and coming white belts that will really give them a great opportunity to test their skills in competition.
This tournament like other tournaments in the Florida is relatively inexpensive to register, and once registered you will be able to start your road to becoming a great competitor. Competition is a very important aspect of improving your Jiu Jitsu game and not only at Team Third Law do we train competitors, but people that just want to get into better shape and learn a martial art that is going to allow them to feel more confident in themselves.

Success
1. Never Give Up…
If you quit, you obviously won’t succeed, so don’t quit and you can. Don’t let short-term failures get you down. Everyone fails some times; it is what you do after the failure that will make or break you. Successful people learn from their failures, make corrections, and keep working to achieve their long-term goals.
2. It’s All Mental…
“Wrestling is 90% mental, the rest is in your head.” You have to believe it to achieve it. What you focus on will become reality. Keep your focus (thoughts) on what you want. Set goals and review them daily. Everything you do should be geared to achieving your goals. What you think, what you eat, how you work out, when you work out, who you socialize with, etc. all play a part in your own success. Thoughts become actions. Repeated actions turn into habits. Habits become your character and character determines you future.
3. Do the Right Thing…
Make it a habit to “do the right thing” all the time. ONE THING LEADS TO ANOTHER…BE IT BAD OR BE IT GOOD.
4. Develop Good Technique…
Learn high percentage stuff. With average technique, you can beat a lot of people but beating guys better than you requires better technique (along with more mental toughness and better conditioning). We always train and learn techniques that will work against the top 3% of competitors.
5. Be Willing to Pay the Price…
You must be willing to make sacrifices to achieve your goals. Greater goals require larger sacrifices.
6. Be in Shape…All the Time!
Don’t take huge blocks of time off. You can recover in 24 to 36 hours. Conditioning is CUMULATIVE. It takes consistent workouts to get in better shape. Understand that conditioning is the one factor you have the most control over.
7. Learn to Fight…
Being able and willing to fight tooth and nail is the difference between winning the close ones or not. You’ve heard the quote “when the going gets tough, the tough get going.” Relish the tough situations and take special pride in overcoming those moments of extreme hardship. If it were easy, everyone would be World Champion. At this level is not a game, it’s not a match…it’s a FIGHT!
8. Make It a Habit…Get used to working hard and make hard work a habit. Have fun but consistently work at improving yourself. Nothing worthwhile is every accomplished without a great deal of effort. Making changes and getting better is hard. Get used to being on the edge and be comfortable outside of your comfort zone.
9. Associate with the Right People…Bad company corrupts, good company builds up. Steel sharpens steel. Pick friends wisely. If you want to be a national champ, you need to spend your free time with others who have similar goals.
10. Know When to Take a Break…If you are on a full-time training routine, make sure to take a day completely off each week. After about 3 weeks of consistent practice, you can take a few days away without ill-effect. This will give you time to heal up nagging injuries, get some perspective, and come back recharged.
11. Time Management
It is not the number of hours you put in, but instead what you put into those hours.
12. Be Proactive…Take care of issues as soon as possible or even better, before they come up. Don’t wait until the last minute. It is a lot easier to maintain a car than it is to repair a broken one… the same principle applies to your training, your health, and your life. Be ahead of the curve, not behind it.
13. Be top 3%. Always push to be in the top 3% and if for whatever reason you are not prepared enough to be find out what you need to work on to be one step closer. Remeber:
“Forget Yesterday. I know what I had to do that I did not do to be where I want to be. Now tell me friend what do I need to do today to get to be where I want to be tomorrow.”

Chris Ocampo Blue Belt Promotion

New Competition Team Members
The 4th White Belt Competition Team Tryout was by far the best tryout Team Third Law BJJ has seen yet! We had a awesome turnout of 11 new competitors and 1 promotion. Chris Ocampo a long time student of Team Third Law got promoted to the rank of blue belt under the conditiion that he had to complete the tryout. He and the 11 new hopefuls entered with a open mind and ready to push.
This tryout like we stated in a previous post is far from easy… When you see the videos and pictures from this tryout your gonna see how much hardwork it takes to be apart of the competition team. We had 3 people puke and really question if this is what they wanted to do but all of them pushed through it and finished strong.
We really look forward to taking all of the new incoming graduates of the tryouts to future competitions. You can find the list at http://www.ThirdLawCoach.com and please visit youtube and subscribe to Team Third Law to check out all of the new videos of this Competition Team Tryout. Also, check out Chris Ocampo’s Blue Belt Promotion and the struggle that he went through to get the prize of blue belt.

The NoGi aspect or submission wrestling side of Jiu Jitsu is awesome and there are alot less rules usually in competitions as to what attacks you can do and not do. Especially at tournaments like NAGA where they allow any skill level to do heelhooks at competition. Which could be very very dangerous but most people do not know how to attack from the 50/50 , you rarely see anyone playing this guard. What is good and bad about the guard is that it’s a guard that you and the other person are in a mirror position. Meaning that whatever attack you can do to the person he can also do it to you. Therefore it makes the guard very good for someone that knows proper defense, and has good heel hooks or other leg attacks but very bad if you have no idea what to do when it comes to this position.
All things considered the 50/50 can be a guard that you either want to play because you know a lot about the position and you like playing from their or a guard that you would rather not get to because you don’t like being in the same position as your opponent. In this position a white belt could tap a black belt if the black belt didn’t have a good system to defend from the 50/50 and heelhooks. It is unfortunately easy to get caught with a heelhooksin this position and what makes it super unfortunate would be that if you get heelhooked and the guy breaks your leg… You could be out for six months.
So the best way to start learning how to be better at surviving the 50/50 and heelhooks would be learning the basics. Such as always figure four locking you legs, or keep your legs extended and crossed so that he can’t get under you heel and break it off like he wants to. When in this position making sure your heel is either flat to the mat or hidden as soon as you raise your heel he is going to be looking to get underneath it and break your leg. So these are just some hints about the 50/50 position and heelhooks, a relatively new side of the game in Jiu Jitsu but a game that must be learned and understood so you never get taken advantage of in this position

Go Getting
In life you have to go after everything in your life and get it done no matter what the circumstances. Sometimes to get things accomplished in your life you have to ignore being tired, other circumstances and get whatever it is that you need to get done accomplished then move on to the next task. Things like something that needs to be implemented into your business to get more customers, to gain more prospects, to increase your sucess. Doesn’t it make sense to do something like this as soon as you can and ignore all of the other factors that are preventing you from getting it done and just do it! It is really that simple.
There is no secret science to being a GoGetter, a person that goes after what needs to be done and ignores all circumstances to get it done. Roberto Torralbas talks alot about the GoGetter Lifestyle on his website GoGetterLifestyle.com. If you want to learn more about being a GoGetter this is a website you need to check out! The concept is very easy to grasp though, believe me it’s very simple but alot of people are not willing to put forth the effort to get these things done. Scaraficing time with friends, family, sleep, better food all these things, are going to be worth it in the end because your going to accomplish things that you thought were unattainable. Until you realized all you have to do is put EVERYTHING else aside and focus on what needs to be done and get it done.
If you start to think this way in your life your going to start achieveing your goals so much faster. Even though your sacraficing little things like sleep, time with friends your going to be using your time to better your life… The most important asset in anyones life is TIME, if you haven’t realized this by now you need to read a previous article called Time Management. Being that time is your number one asset you have to take advantage of all the time you have in a day, if you don’t take proper advantage of this time by pushing to achieve your goals (gogetting) your going to better your life. All you have to do is avoid all other life circumstances and just push to acheive what needs to be done and it will get done and you will be a GoGetter.

A team that wants to be at its highest level, compete with the best, train the best, simply be the best must have a strong team philosophy. At Team Third Law we put a huge emphasis on the fact that we have a very strong team environment and we are always looking to make each other better. Because frankly if you have a team where everyone in it is always out to get one another there is no way on earth that the team can be productive.
The reason why we have such a strong team environment is because of the emphasis we put on it, We tell all of our students that you must treat everyone like you would want to be treated. Also, their are always other constant reminders that force the environment to be positive and uplifting. We stated in a previous article the importance of saying SUPER FANTASTIC, another asset to what makes our team that much better.
Our team philosophy simply consists of, helping each other out, not holding any knowledge back, and doing what is best for the team. You have to believe that making the team better is going to benefit you overall, because with a bigger and stronger team you get more people to roll with, more people to train with, a bigger school to fit new people, the list goes on and on…. In Conclusion, without a strong team philosophy in place, to always be helping each other to reach each others goals and succeed, the team won’t make it and that is why Team Philosophy is SUPER IMPORTANT.
