Super Fantastic!!! – Importance Of Always Being Positive

SUPER FANTASTIC

SUPER FANTASTIC

If someone were to always say that they were Super Fantastic!!! when actually they were extremely tired just by them saying this adds to the positive environment around them. Same as when you keep telling yourself your tired, its been such a long day, I’m exhausted… All negative things that are just going to bring the energy around you down. That’s why at Team Third Law you will never hear someone say the word “tired” only SUPER FANTASTIC or I am having the BEST day of my LIFE!

I hope this is making sense to you because it can benefit your life in so many different aspects. Not only in the classroom should you be thinking this way but as you go about your daily life. When you wake up in the morning and your tired… No! Your fantastic and ready to start the day super energized just telling yourself this is going to trick your subconscious into to believing this and make your day fantastic.

The results of saying Super Fantastic or feeling GREAT have been huge improvements in the environment at the school. Ever since this system was implemented everyone is class is excited to learn and eager to push themselves harder and faster.

Being An Instructor, Doesn’t Mean You Need To Have A Black Belt

It is true that a belt color  symbolizes a good understanding of the technique, and a way to pass on the techniques to others  in theory.  The truth of the matter that in this day and age at least in the art of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu a Blue Blet instructor can surpass the ability to teach than much black belt instructors. There are many things that are requied that many black belt instructors take for granted..

For example here are some of the things you can do that if a blue belt instructor did could surpass that of a black belt.

  • Remember everyone name…make someone look like the idiot not you
  • Call each other coach beker coach andre coach kevin best way to get your students is to start addressing your students as sir, if they come up to you and say hey andre say no sir its either coach andre or coach arata. Always treat your student by sir or mam.
  • When the student is doing good in class call them by there last name.
  • Proper match-ups in grappling matches
  • Identify everybody in class
  • If there is any problem with a student pulling aside and fix the problem.(I’m here to help you)
  • School founded to help everybody improve
  • Sign-in when you get here(blue book)(time-in) (time-out)
  • Do not leave a mess
  • Say “Ous” after every technique
  • When I say 123 clap, gets the students more involved in the class
  • When i say got it you say got and i say say good, got it!? GOT IT good. Another way to get them more involved..
  • Be exciting on the beginning of class
  • Tell students about ThirdLawcoach.com
  • Be friendly
  • Are you asking the students questions, keep them awake keep them engaged
  • When someone asks you how is your day you say i am having a fanstastic day!  A Awesome day never a bad day or a long day.
  • Words that your saying, no cursing

Beware of non verbal communication

  • words are 7%
  • Tone of voice is 38%
  • body language is 55%
  • Facial expersions most important

START OUT EACH CLASS WITH HAVING A GREAT/FANTASTIC DAY!

AT EVERY CLASS DO THIS:

  1. A.B.P. news at school (competition results, events)
  2. sign in and scan ids each class
  3. use hand motions ie tom cruise in a few good men
  4. when explaining technique give a history. my favorite technique, or i used this technique____.

GAMES:

  1. sprint from belly
  2. monkey in the middle
  3. bouncy game
  4. touch knee sprawl
  5. wheelbarrow races
  6. catch the belt
  7. clap and pin
  8. hold hands up in victory
  9. shrimp around corners
  10. stepping stones with spots

De la Riva Guard

Mendes vs. Cobrinha

Mendes vs. Cobrinha

The De la Riva guard is a guard that is mainly utilized at the highest level of Jiu Jitsu. Mainly people like Rafael Mendes and Cobrinha have been using this guard and destroying their opponents with. Making it a guard that if you don’t understand how the guard works and everything flows together then your being left in the dust.

At Team Third Law we have realized this and have utilized the position in competition and drilling the guard everyday in the combat gold program. Drilling the back-takes, sweeps, submissions everything about the guard, as well as learning to understand the concept of how De La Riva flows together with 2 other positions as well. Those being the Half Guard, and 50/50.

So as you can see the De La Riva Guard is definitely a guard where the possibilities of attacks are limitless, and very effective if being utilized by World Champions. Like I said earlier we need to mimic the best to be the best. Do what works, and do what you know works. So I look forward to drilling the position more and more to better understand the overall concept behind the entire position

Italy Trip – Bucket List

Italy Trip

 Italian Flag

In January, Roberto Torralbas put Joey Ruggiero (me) on the spot in front of class and asked him what he wanted to do before he died and I said go to Italy… So instead of waiting forever to get something like this done and then maybe never get it done Roberto pushed me to achieve this in three months. So In March me and Roberto will be going to Italy to be able to check that off my my bucket list.

Now that you know the background of where this story is coming from I want to share with you some of the places we are going to be visiting on this awesome trip…

Colosseum

On the top of the list is the Colosseum a place where gladiators fought and many events were help a super important stop on the trip. Were also going to see if they’ll let us grapple inside the Colosseum. Making sure to represent Team Third Law BJJ in Italy very well. Leading us to the next stop on our trip being.

City of Rome

City of Rome

The city of Rome has a HUGE amount of things that you can do but mainly has some of the nicest spots to eat ever. Then after seeing all that rome has to offer, maybe visit some of the museums to see some of the sculptures, just try to see as much as possible.

These are just some of the things that we plan on doing when we get to Italy doing as much as we can as fast as we can because time is limited. More ideas on plans for Italy and PLEASE!! leave in the COMMENTS some ideas that you may have for us on things to do.

Anaconda Choke

Anaconda Choke

Anaconda Choke

In combat gold stated in a previous post, we have a separate curriculum of techniques that we are teaching. We drill them over and over, then at the beginning of the next month we are tested on all of the techniques making sure that we know all of them to the point. I love this system because it’s forcing our Jiu Jitsu gameplans to grow more and more, the more techniques we are learning the more we are forced to retain and be tested on.

There is nothing better then being able to learn a whole new series of techniques to add to your game-plan that you can start using at the competition level. Not only this but as well as finding out what techniques you were struggling with when it came to the test and which need the most work. Having a seperate ciriculium for combat gold is in place because they are the top of the top that train at Team Third Law the students that are the most dedicated, want to train the hardest, and learn as fast as possible.

If you think your ready to start training in a Team atomsphere that treaches you a detailed ciriculium, with series of attacks about certain positions until you master the position then this school is the place for you. Not only will you learn more in one day then most people that train are able to learn in an entire week but you will be able to retain this information because you want to get a good grade on your test.

Bread Cutter Choke

The Bread Cutter Choke

The Bread Cutter Choke

This move along with many others will be things that the people in the combat gold program at Team Third Law will be tested on at the end of this month. Not only this choke but other moves such as all of the brabo chokes,  and other small errors that Roberto Torralbas the head instructor has seen us making at the tournament level.

The bread cutter choke is not only a super effective choke, but probably one of the safest and hardest submissions to stop from the north south position. Because once in the north south position the persons elbows usually open up when they try to bridge and shrimp. This is the perfect opportunity to sink your hand underneath their arm and grab with a collar grip.

You can check out more of the curriculum this month for combat gold on http://www.ThirdLawCoach.com. Where you will also find all of the techniques we will be teaching this month in the white belt basics program and also the Muay Thai – Kick Boxing. This website is the biggest resource for our students to use to retain the most about techniques being taught, and its a great resource to look over past techniques we went over in case you have questions about specific details.

Jiu Jitsu & Traveling

Traveling is one of the best parts about Jiu Jitsu, because when start to get more involved with the sport such as competing and going to international level tournaments you have to travel to get to these places. Which for me is a great aspect of the sport because not only do you get to compete and challenge yourself up again top competition but you get to travel around the world seeing places that you would not normally go to depending on if you choose to do Jiu Jitsu or not. So not only do you get to travel with Jiu Jitsu but you get to to travel with your teammates.

We really look forward to going to competitions in places like Brazil & throughout the United States such as California because not only do you get to do a sport that is going to allow you test yourself on a daily basis in the classroom training hard but against people that you have never met before. Jiu Jitsu is going to open up many opportunities in your life that you may not have thought of in the past. Simply because you didn’t think they were possible or goals that you thought were unattainable.

All of the goals that you wanted to achieve, are possible and your teammates at Team Third Law are going to guide you on the path that will take you where you need to go to achieve these goals. Maybe your goal was to travel around the world competition, well we already have competitors that are doing this and taking advantage of the fact that Jiu Jitsu is allowing them to do these things. So if you want to start traveling, competiting, getting into the best shape of your life today join Team Third Law and start your path to greatness.

Team Donations & Importance Of Testing

Today’s test was a blast overall, we had a little bit better overall average of a B+. Which is good it shows us that our students are catching on to using the outside resources to the school wisely and investing their time wisely in class as well. We had a great turnout of students as well for the test and all of them did outstanding. The ones that really stood out would be Joey Ruggiero with back to back 100% scores on both of his tests and Kim Rivers with a 100% on her test as well, both of these students training hard to retain the most knowledge of the technique.

What most people don’t know about Team Third Law is that we NEVER charge for Belts, testing, or any of these things. Why? you may ask simply because we want you to know that we are giving you the belt in that we feel you deserve it and not that we want you to pay us for it. So what we due ask in return is a small donation to the school for the competition team so that the we have a little bit less worries when it comes to making sure our competitors can get a good nights rest before a tournament.

We are just starting to take donations for the competition team simply because the people that are competing are the people in the school that are the most dedicated the ones that are putting all of their time and investing it into Jiu Jitsu because they love the sport. Not everyone gets to do that maybe because of life circumstances, so all we are asking is that you help support these students and give a small donation the the competition to help them out because every little bit helps.

Test Day !

Closed Guard

Closed Guard

Today is that day again at Team Third Law, where we test our students on their knowledge of the closed guard techniques we have taught them this entire month. Not only will this test determine what techniques they need to work on but will prepare them for next months ciriculium.

The Testing at Team Third Law is not a standardized test or something of that nature it is simply a test of how well you know the techniques that are being taught and understand all of the little details involved. The test this month is going to be on the closed guard curriculum and since last months test was Gi, this months test will be in the No-Gi.

Our students at Team Third Law, take the test seriously and really want to do their best on the test because it will determine how well they are retaining the technique and which techniques really need the most work. So it is super important that you come to test day and do your best to get A’s lasts months average was a B plus so lets shoot for an A average this month.
